It all started with a 6 hour drive to Heathrow, a few tears waving my dad off and then onto an 11 and a half hour flight.
I flew with Eva Air, a company I’d never even heard of. The flight itself consisted of the choice of about 5 English films and not much else but luckily it was an overnight flight, meaning time to sleep. Not that I actually managed more than 2 hours of this.
I arrived in Bangkok and can only describe myself as a headless chicken on a mad scramble to try and find the cheapest way to get to my first hostel.
One cheap bus ride later and i arrived at the Mad Monkey Hostel. I thought it would be wise to book a party hostel to try and make friends. This got off to a bad start by walking into a four person shared dorm which contained two Chinese friends who didn’t speak one word of English. Shouting the word “hello” to be returned with silence and a blank expression.
I quickly showered and headed for the hostel bar which was wild and then onto Khao San Road – the party scene. After one crazy night out and waking up in an overwhelming city I decided to check out one day early and head straight for the islands.
This took a journey of a one hour 10 minute flight from Bangkok to Surat Thani followed by a one night stay in a hotel in a very remote location to try and recharge my batteries and then a one hour 45 minute ferry to Koh samui.
At this point I was functioning on roughly 3 hours sleep since I had left home and felt lonely, overwhelmed and quite frankly like getting straight back on a plane to Newcastle.
