Koh Lanta – Animal Welfare

Koh Lanta is a small island easily accessible from Krabi and I decided to go here after being amazed by the views last time I was in Thailand.

However upon arrival with it being low season I can only describe it as being deserted and looking like a zombie apocalypse had occurred.

Bringing me onto my first accommodation nightmare. I stayed in Lanta New Beach Bungalows, the same as last time. However this time it resembled a construction site with a green algae pool and a closed restaurant/bar. I think i may of actually been the only person staying on the resort.

There wasn’t much to do with everywhere being empty so this entire post will be dedicated to the amazing place i stumbled upon on Tripadvisor, Lanta Animal Welfare.

This place was funded by a Norwegian woman who quit her job to try and tackle the cruelty to dogs and cats in Thailand and offer rehabilitation to suffering and sick animals to get them adopted. It is a non-profit charity and relies solely on donations by people visiting or online.

I spent the day on a guided tour seeing the work they achieve and their vet clinic, which offers free services to any Thai people with sick animals as well as rescue animals. I also volunteered to walk the dogs and give attention to many puppies by being locked in the puppy pen which was nothing short of my heaven.

It breaks my heart the way people can treat innocent animals. In order for the animals to be adopted they require a ‘travel buddy’, basically a traveller who is flying home or to a country the animal has been adopted from so they can get the animal off the luggage trolley and hand them to their excited new owners.

Unfortunately in low season this is hard to find and animals who have been adopted can end up here for months at a time until one is found.

Anyone interested in being a ‘travel buddy’ or in donating any form of money the link is as follows https://lantaanimalwelfare.com/support-us/become-flight-volunteer/
